It's generally a topic we don't think about until it matters to us... Fertility.
I personally never even considered the thought that I myself would have fertility issues and would need assistance in the form of medications and operations until the time came for me to start my own family.
Over the years, I have helped thousands of slimmers and one of the reasons a lot of slimmers come and see me is because they want to start a family with their partners but are struggling to conceive.
Whilst there are many conditions that can hinder our fertility, we CAN do something to improve it.
In the UK, the NHS can fund fertility treatment but it comes with restrictions. Generally the women need to have a BMI of below 30 &/or need to be under the age of 40.
If you are currently trying to get pregnant, being overweight or obese can affect your chances of naturally conceiving. Obese women can also experience more difficulties during their pregnancy & childbirth.
As women, we usually store more fat around our abdomens and this can have an overall effect on hormone levels (can cause hormone imbalances), lack of ovulation, problems with menstruating & resistance to fertility treatment (this is particularly common with ladies who suffer from PCOS). In turn, this leads to further complications conceiving.
LOSING JUST 10% OF YOUR BODY WEIGHT.......
Research shows that losing just 10% of your body weight can improve your fertility as this weight loss can reduce the fat stored around our stomach and improve ovulation (particularly for ladies who do have PCOS).
If you are currently struggling to conceive or undergoing fertility treatment, do consider this...
Unfortunately, there's a higher risk of complications during pregnancy for women who are overweight or obese. Particularly with childbirth & the need for emergency Cesareans & high blood pressure.
how to lose weight for fertility
There are many ways in which you can lose weight to improve your fertility. You may wish to consider counting your calories but do remember that it isn't always about the amount of calories you are consuming but more about the quality of calories.
There's no point counting your calories if you are just going to use your calorie intake with just chocolate (there's no nutritional value in that). Instead consider what your body needs. Remember, you need to treat your body as a temple so look for nutritional content in everything you eat. Does it contain vitamins? minerals? micro-nutrients?
Do not embark on a quick fix faddy diet. Sure there's lots of magic capsules or the latest cabbage broth diet but again is it ensuring it will give you the vitamins and minerals your body needs? your body needs as much support & strength as it can get to ensure a happy & healthy pregnancy. If you put in the ground work now, you will certainly appreciate the nutrients during certain trimesters.
