I've noticed a lot of people talking about the Keto diet in recent months like it's a new thing but the reality is, that Ketogenic dieting (or keto-diets) have been around for such a long time.
It seems every now and again, there's a new take/version on keto dieting and it makes the diet blow up and become a 'trend'. The reality is that keto dieting is a fantastic way of losing weight but if you are new to keto-dieting, it can seem a bit daunting - keeping an eye on carb levels, protein levels - making sure you don't eat too much fats but the reality is that it needn't be daunting. In this article, we're going to discuss the Keto diet and tell you how you can follow your own keto plan to help you lose weight.
What is a keto diet?
Loved by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Keto dieting is a way of cutting back on your carbs and increasing your protein intake. When you reduce your intake of carbohydrate, your body naturally produces ketones. These ketones are used as our energy and when we produce ketones we are known to be in a state called Ketosis.
You may be familiar with Atkins Diet or Paleo? well they work along the same lines.
Is it safe?
As long as you don't starve yourself or have certain medical conditions, being in ketosis is safe. In fact it's a natural state that our bodies can easily enter into. Sadly, there's a misconception that it's dangerous and this is because a lot of people get Ketosis mixed up with ketoacidosis (which is a completely different thing altogether).
What would I eat to be in ketosis/for the keto diet?
On a keto diet plan, slimmers would generally be eating less carbohydrtae and more protein. So think foods such as meat, fish, eggs, greens and dairy. They would try to avoid foods such as pastas, breads, rich sauces, alcohol, confectionery. Generally refined carbs, sugars (whether it be found in fruits or confectionery) are banned or limited.
Plans such as the SMLDiet are an easy way of being on the Keto diet without the problem of having to make sure you are eating the right amount of proteins/carbs and without the need of weighing your foods
This is because we are a Total food Replacement plan so in a nutshell, slimmers who want to achieve ketosis would have 4 of our meal replacements per day and can choose to have 1 of our diet snacks per day if they wanted to (this is known as the simple plan). They would achieve the same kind of weight loss as they would if they were following the Keto diet.
Alternatively, whilst on the SMLDiet, slimmers can choose to have maybe 1, 2 or 3 of our meal replacements per day and make the plan their own. They would then choose to eat low carb meals/snacks as they wish.
What are the benefits of a keto diet?
lets state the obvious - weight loss!
As the slimmer is burning their stored fat and using that as their energy source, they can expect faster weight loss, On a plan such as the SMLDiet, slimmers have lost an average of a stone a month but it can be more or can be less depending on the slimmers body size.
Sense of Euphoria!
A lot of slimmers who go into ketosis notice they seem more positive, have more energy and require less sleep. They notice their productivity levels increase and as a result achieve much more success in their day to day activities.
How to make Keto diet work for you?
When you're on a VLCD, all you need is for the temperature to change just a bit and boy do you feel it?!
But why is it when you are on a VLCD, do you feel the cold so much and what can you do about it?
Why do I feel so cold?
When you embark on a Very Low Calorie Diet (also known as a total food replacement plan or a VLCD for short), you consume far less calories than you usually would. Due to the smaller amount of calories and carbohydrates you are consuming, your body enters a state of ketosis (this is a perfectly SAFE & NATURAL process for your body). Ketosis is where your body turns stored fat into energy to keep you functioning and that's why you lose weight so quickly on a VLCD.
Ketosis can bring some side effects. In the early stages of entering ketosis, slimmers may have a slight headache, may even feel abit of fever, feel hunger or could even feel lethargic (these symptoms vary from slimmer to slimmer & do not happen to everyone). Once you are in ketosis though, alot of slimmers notice those initial side effects start to subside. However, some side effects do remain and those are the following:
* Feeling thirstier than usual
* Strange or metallic taste in the mouth
* Feeling colder than usual (cold hands, cold feet).
Feeling colder is very common and this is because when we are in ketosis, the body naturally tries to preserve energy where it can and one thing it does is to slow certain processes down and that's why we usually feel colder with our extremities such as hands and feet really feeling it.
What can I do about feeling the cold on a VLCD?
Depending on the time of year, you may not notice the cold as much (slimmers in the summer sometimes welcome that cooler body temperature feeling) but if you are on a VLCD in Autumn or Winter, you may notice it more and here's what you can do to help yourself warm up.
Extra side note - feeling colder than usual is a good thing as it reminds you that ketosis is working for you and your body is burning those calories.
